The Spirit of GamboPerforming with the Newberry Consort 2008-2009 – During the 2008-2009 season, the Spirit of Gambo will be joining the Newberry consort two unique concert programs featuring Jewish Music in English Courts and a concert celebrating the 450th anniversary of the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I. The Elizabethan program will consist of English viol consort music, concluding with the 1912 silent movie classic Queen Elizabeth, to which the Newberry Consort will provide the music. Starring an aging but peppy Sarah Bernhardt, this film is shot mostly from afar, as she poses and flings her arms about and seemingly overacts. But watch Bernhardt's face, strain to hear her absent voice, and you can see what a powerhouse she must have been on stage. She herself claimed to be pleased with the result, crying: "I am immortal! I am a film!" For more information on the Spirit of Gambo – a Chicago Consort of Viols, visit http://www.spiritofgambo.org/. Newberry Consort – Queen Elizabeth – Film & Music – Fair Oriana – Music of the Court of Elizabeth I Upon the 450th Anniversary of Her Coronation (Viola da Gamba)
Fullerton Hall, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL
Thursday, December 18, 2008 6:00PM
Enjoy a concert of English viol consort music, concluding with the 1912 silent movie classic Queen Elizabeth, to which the Newberry Consort will provide the music. I am a film!"
